Town Stewards

The Long Island Conservancy is establishing a Town Steward for each of Long Island’s 13 towns and for The Shinnecock Nation. Every community has its environmental champions, local people who know the town’s waters, forests and marshes, who know what environmental challenges that community faces. Our mission is to identify and support local champions in every community. How well do you know your town? Could you see yourself planting native plants with your neighbors or removing invasive ones?

The Town Stewards will assist in organizing locally: What civic organizations need to be contacted? Where are we finding invasive plants, and how do we plan their removal? Where could habitat restored? Is there a place to plant a native meadow? An orchard of American Chestnuts? A sump that could be transformed into a bird sanctuary?

Are the street trees chosen by the town at least mostly native? How can you help people in your town to understand why planting native is so important to Long Island’s local wildlife and its future!

Below we have maps of all the towns as downloadable PDFs and via links to interactive maps that in turn can be accessed via Regrid’s Property App. With the app, Town Stewards can run local surveys and note what is happening in their communities — where there are invasive plants, or where there is important habitat.
