Programs That Inspire the Next Generation of Conservationists

At Long Island Conservancy, we believe meaningful connections to nature begin early and grow over time. Our educational programs are designed to engage children, students, families, and schools through hands-on outdoor learning, environmental stewardship, and leadership development. From first nature walks to youth advocacy, each program helps participants build confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong appreciation for Long Island’s natural landscapes.

Whether you’re a parent, educator, scout leader, or school administrator, we welcome opportunities to bring these experiences to your community.

Tykes That Hike

Tykes That Hike introduces children ages 2–8 and their caregivers to Long Island’s natural landscapes through guided hikes, nature‑based play, and seasonal storytelling. Each session aligns with the rhythms of the season, encouraging children to observe changes in color, texture, sound, and scent. Activities such as leaf rubbings, bug hunts, bird listening, and native plant scavenger hunts build early ecological literacy while engaging the senses. What makes Tykes That Hike especially powerful is its intergenerational model: parents, grandparents, and caregivers participate fully, strengthening family bonds and creating shared experiences that cultivate a collective sense of responsibility for the land. Through exploration, creativity, and reflection, children develop emotional resilience, social connection, and a joyful sense of belonging in the natural world.

Sprout Squad

Sprout Squad, LIC’s youth restoration and leadership corps, engages middle school students in hands‑on ecological restoration. Participants learn to identify native and invasive species and restore pollinator habitats. Sprout Squad transforms restoration into a living classroom, helping young adolescents build confidence, teamwork skills, and a sense of agency in shaping their communities.

Young Environmental Ambassadors Program

The Young Environmental Ambassadors Program is designed for high school students ready to take on civic leadership. Ambassadors participate in advanced restoration projects, support community science initiatives, and receive training in public speaking, environmental policy, and youth advocacy. Through mentorship, skill‑building workshops, and real‑world leadership opportunities, Ambassadors develop civic identity, professional readiness, and the confidence to influence environmental decision‑making in their own neighborhoods.
