Plantstock V – April 19th, 2025
Spring is here yet again! And so is Plantstock V! From 10-2 on Saturday, April 19th, at Hamlet Organic Garden in Brookhaven Hamlet, we will gather once more to promote native plants! We will be offering for sale a variety of milkweeds to support our monarch populations, and to do battle against the Spotted Lanternfly!

This year, we are establishing Native Plant Exchange where local native plant growers will vend their natives. LINPI (The Long Island Native Plant Initiative) are offering their extensive overwintered stock of natives. Buy your plants in advance at this link: LINPI PLANT SALES.
Buy them for pickup at Plantstock, or pick them up at LINPI.
Arbor Day After – April 26th, 2025
Spring is here! The following Saturday, April 26th 10-2 is an event we are calling Arbor Day After. Arbor Day is Friday the 25th. But what of the rest of the year? And how do we go beyond planting just one tree? What of a grove of American Chestnuts? The Long Island Conservancy is leading the charge to restore this all but extinct giant of the forest. What what can we do to save the many trees being taken down by invasive vines like oriental bittersweet, English Ivy, and Porcelainberry?
Come join us at Meadowcroft, aka The Roosevelt Estate, which is at 299 Middle Road between Sayville and Bayport, and bring whatever loppers you have. Wear gloves and boots. This is a great opportunity to get in some volunteer hours while making a difference at this iconic landmark. There will be no bathroom facilities so plan accordingly.
The Fungus Among Us – May 3rd, 2025
Our Spring Is Here Saturday Series continues Saturday, May 3rd between 10-2 with “Exploring The Life Underground: The Fungus Among Us,” pending the approval of Suffolk County Parks.
The Long Island Conservancy’s Co-Founder and Vice-President Frank Piccininni will present his research on site at West Hills County Park in Melville. What is the relationship between what we see growing above ground and the microbial communities in the soil? How do invasive plants take advantage of disturbed habitat, where the soil itself has been compromised? Frank’s leading edge research will have you rethink how forests are constituted, and how potentially they can be healed.
Mother Nature Day – May 10th, 2025
Finally our Spring Is Here series concludes with on Saturday, May 10th between 10-2 at The Science Museum of Long Island in Manhasset / Plandome with Mother Nature Day, which of course falls on the day before Mother’s Day.
We will be showcasing our work at Leeds Pond Preserve removing invasive plants and planting natives at SMLI, and offering talks on our efforts to restore The American Chestnut, and the work done to restore a pond at the nearby Sands Point Preserve.
We will also be offering for sale native plant alternatives for Mother’s Day. Wouldn’t some milkweed or Cardinal Flower be a more welcome alternative than, say, some carnations which will sit in a vase for a week?

Milkweed attracts Monarchs and Cardinal Flower attracts hummingbirds. We will have some interesting and beautiful natives on hand.
Stay in Touch For Future Events!
We have more events for summer in planning, events more centered on particular communities — Baldwin, Herrick, East Hampton, Southampton. Stay Tuned!

I will be away on the 26th, but I would love to learn more about the efforts to reduce the impact of invasive vines. Can you recommend any resources for further learning?
